Conjuctions

(kata penghubung)

• Conjunctions are words that join together words, phrases or sentences. 
• Conjunction adalah kata sambung yang menghubungkan kata-kata prasa atau kalimat.
• Conjunction tidak seperti preposition yang dapat dihubungkan dengan objek.
• Conjunction tidak seperti adverb yang menerangkan kata.
• Conjunction hanya menghubungkan kata-kata atau kalimat-kalimat dsb.
• Maka dari itu kadang-kadang kata yang sama bisa menjadi konjungsi kadang menjadi adverb atau kadang menjadi preposisi pada bagian yang lainnya lagi.

Contoh :

Preposisi as:
He was chosen as a classchief.
Dia dipilih sebagai ketua kelas.
Adverb  as:
Do as he said to you.
Kerjakan seperti yang dia katakan padamu.
Konjungsi  as:
I took a rest just as he came.
Saya istirahat ketika ia datang.

Konjungsi (kata sambung) di bagi menjadi dua:

1. Co-ordinating conjunction.

Co-ordinating conjuction menghubungkan kalimat-kalimat yang sederajat, yaitu kalimat yang satu tidak bergantung pada kalimat yang lain.
Co-ordinating conjuncntion terbagi menjadi empat:

a. Cumulative : menunjukkan penambahan.

again : lagi pula
and : dan.
also : juga.
as well as : dan juga.
besides : disamping itu
both …. and ….. : dan;juga/ keduanya ….. dan …..
further : selanjutnya
further more : selanjutnya/lagipula
no less than : dan …. sama tarafnya.
not only …. but also… : tidak hanya….. tapi juga ….
now : sejak
secondly : kedua

b. Alternative : menunjukkan pilihan

either … or …… : baik …. atau …..
neither …. nor ….. : bukan … ataupun ….
or : atau
otherwise : kalau tidak

c. Adversative : menunjukkan kontras

but : tetapi
however : tetapi
nevertheless : namun
only : cuma
on the contrary : sebaliknya
on the other hand : sebaliknya
still : namun
whereas : sedangkan/padahal
while : sedangkan/sementara
yet : namun, sekalipun begitu

d. Illative : menunjukkan kesimpulan.

accordingly : jadi,karena itu,maka
consequently : oleh karenannya
for : karena
hence : sebab itu, karena itu
so : oleh sebab itu
so then : maka
then : maka

Contoh pemakaian Co-ordinating conjunction dalam kalimat.

I am a student and he is a teacher.
She is both a secretary and a housewife.
He is both smart and industrious.
They are healthy, and we also.
She as well as you is impatient.
She no less than Ali is lazy.
Not only you, but all of us will be punished by the teacher.
She is not only beautiful but also smart.
Now that I am older, I understand better.
You can choose either apple or orange.
He was neither a police nor a pilot.
You or her is diligent.
Hurry up, else we’ll be late again.
We must study hard, otherwise we’ll fail in the exam.
He is stupid, but diligent.
She is very rich, yet she isn’t happy.
He is a fat boy, nevertheless he is weak.
I’d like to come to your party, however, I have no time.
Clever boy is diligent, whereas stupid boy is lazy.
Elephant is very big, while ant is very small.
You may sit down, while I stand.
The drama is interesting, only too long.
He was sick, therefore he didn’t go to school.
The floor is dirty, so I sweep it.
It’s time to have breakfast, so then let’s have it.
If you do wrong, then you must admit it.
She is delated from the list for coming late.
I can’t treat you, for I  don’t have any money.

2. Subordinating Conjucntions

Menghubungkan kalimat pokok ( principal sentence) dengan anak kalimat (dependent sentence).

after : setelah
although : meskipun
as …. as : se
as far as : sepanjang
as if : seakan-akan, seolah-olah
as long as : selama
as soon as : segera
as : karena, ketika
as for : kalau
because : karena
ere : sebelum
even though : meskipun
however : akan tetapi
if : seandainya,kalau
in order that : agar
lest : agar
notwithstanding : meskipun
provided that : asalkan
since : karena, sejak
so that : agar
than : dari pada
that : yaitu, bahwa, sehingga
though : meskipun
unless : kecuali
whether : apakah
while : selagi, selama

Sub-Ordinate Conjunction
a. Addition

- additionally : sebagai tambahan
- and : dan
- besides : selain itu
- both…and…. : baik …. Maupun…. (untuk kalimat posistif)
- nor …. Neither.. : baik … maupun …(untuk kalimat negative)
- either … or …. : baik …. Maupun …(untuk kalimat posistif dan negatif)
- further : lebih jauh
- furthermore : lebih jauh lagi
- moreover : lebih-lebih

b. Comparison

- as if : seolah-olah
- at least : paling tidak
- by contrast : kontrasnya
- conversely : sebaliknya
- in fact : kenyataannya
- indeed : memang
- instead of : dari pada
- while : sementara itu

c. Time

- after : setelah
- as soon as : sesegera
- at the same time : pada waktu yang sama
- before : sebelum
- firstly : pertama-tama
- lastly : terakhir
- once : ketika
- previously : sebelumnya
- secondly : kedua
- since : sejak

d. Cause

- although : meskipun
- as : karena
- because : karena
- but : tetapi
- even though : meskipun
- for : karena
- however : bagaimanapunjuga/tetapi
- now that : sejak
- therefore : oleh karena itu

e. Means

- Thus : jadi

f. Condition

- if : kalau
- provided that : asalkan
- as long as : selama
- even if : sekalipun
- unless : kecuali

g. Purpose

- consequently : akibatnya, sebagai konsekwensinya
- in order to : agar
- so that : sehingga
- without : tanpa

h. Consequence

- admittedly : terus terang, tak dapat di sangkal
- of course : tentu saja
- still : tetap

Contoh pemakaian Subordinating conjunction dalam kalimat.

I will go tomorrow, if I am better.
Saya akan pergi besok, kalau kesehatanku lebih baik.
He made a promise, that he will give me a prize.
Dia berjanji, yaitu dia akan memberi saya hadiah.
We can go now, as the rain stops.
Kita bisa pergi sekarang, karena hujan berhenti.
He doesn’t come, because he is sick.
Dia tidak datang, karena dia sak
He broke the plate, that her mother was angry with him.
Dia memecahkan piring itu, sehingga ibunya marah padanya.
He leaves earlier, in order that he arrive on time.
Dia berangkat lebih awal, agar dia tiba tepat waktu.
We study, so that we may be clever.
Kita belajar, agar kita pandai.
He worked hard, less he should be bankrupt.
Dia bekerja keras, agar dia tidak bankrut.
She will be happy, if you come.
Dia akan bahagia, kalau kamu datang.
I shall come, unless he doesn’t invite me.
Saya akan datang, kecuali dia tidak mengundang saya.
I shall come, provided that he invites me.
Saya akan datang, asalkan dia mengundang saya.
We must do his order, whether we wish it or not.
Kita harus mengerjakan perintahnya, bagaimanapun juga.
He goes to school, even though he has a headache.
Dia tetap pergi ke sekolah, meskipun dia sakit kepala.
He is honest, though he is very poor.
Dia jujur, walaupun dia sangat miskin.
He is taller than I am.
Dia lebih tinggi dari pada saya.
My girlfriend is as pretty as Tamara is.
Pacar saya secantik Tamara.
The elephant is bigger than the rhino is.
Gajah itu lebih besar dari pada badak.
He hasn’t come yet, as far as I know.
Dia belum datang, sepanjang pengetahuanku.
We will reap as we sow.
Kita akan memanen berdasarkan benih yang kita tabur.
He called me, as the clock struck ten.
Dia menelpon saya, ketika jam itu membunyikan pukul sepuluh.
I will take bath, as soon as I arrive at home.
Saya akan mandi, segera setelah tiba di rumah.
I will love her, while she loves me.
Saya akan tetap mencintainya, selama dia mencintaiku.
Wait me here, until I return.
Tunggu saya disini, sampai   saya kembali.
I will effort, as long as I live.
Saya akan berusaha, selama hayat dikandung badan.
He worked hard, before he got what he looked for.
Dia bekerja dengan giat, sebelum dia mendapatkan apa yang dia cari.
I will eat, after he goes.
Saya akan makan, setelah dia pergi.
She looks so tired, since he returned from Banduk.
Dia kelihatan betu capek, sejak dia kembali dari Bandung.
